Your pet is likely to already have had their vaccinations as a youngster and/or regular boosters. Vaccines are important to maintain your pets immunity against many potentially fatal diseases and as such are often required yearly to provide adequate cover.
We vaccinate our dogs against the following diseases; Canine Distemper, Canine Parvovirus, Canine Parainfluenza, Canine Adenovirus (hepatitis), Canine Leptospirosis (Canicola, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Australis and Grippotyphosa).
There is also an optional and recommended vaccination against Kennel Cough, this is given by administering the liquid down the nose were it works best (absorbed through the nasal mucosa). This is most important in animals that mix with dogs alot and also that need to stay in Kennels.
We vaccinate our cats against the following diseases; Feline Panleukopaenia (infectious enteritis or feline parvovirus), Feline Herpes virus type 1 and Feline Calicivirus (cat flu) and Feline Leukaemia virus (FeLV). We administer the vaccine in the back left leg following international advice involving the risk of injection sarcomas incats.
Our approach to vaccines for cats and dogs is not to over vaccinate them unnecessarily, as a result we have adopted a vaccine protocol were our clients pets are vaccinated in a 3 year cycle. Puppy/Kitten vaccines and the first annual booster will be for all conditions, the following 2 years they receive a vaccine containing the viruses which need to be done yearly to maintain immunity leaving out those that will have adequate levels for a 3 year period.
Boosters have a maximum 3 month extension from the date due before requiring the course to be restarted again.
Within the practice we have a 3 year protocol for our dog vaccines as the immunity against the different diseases varies in length of time, so we do not over vaccinate your pets.
Rabbits are vaccinated against 2 diseases; Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic disease. We use a vaccine which covers both diseases in a single vaccine, administered once yearly with the added benefit of saving money and reducing stress.
